Spring Fair

On Thursday, May 24th, 5pm to 8pm we will host our annual Regal Road Public School Spring Fair. All classrooms are invited to choose a theme for a gift basket that will be entered in the fair. It is asked that each participating student donate one new item toward their room's basket that represents the chosen theme. Proceeds from the classroom baskets will go toward school initiatives. The deadline for items to be contributed is Monday May 7th. The baskets will be displayed in the front foyer the week of Monday May 14th and again during our fair.

The fair will feature lots of music, games and kids’ activities. Bring your appetite for the international food table, the Bar-B-Q and the Parenting Centre's bake sale. Be sure to stop by the Silent Auction tables to bid on such goodies as Blue Jays tickets, Big Time Rush concert tickets, original artwork, a set of Bongo Drums and gift certificates for great local restaurants, shops and services. Check out the plant sale for your springtime gardening. Also, students will be bringing home Raffle Tickets to sell. There are 12 awesome prizes to be won like 2 roundtrip tickets anywhere WestJet flies, Moda kid's bike, iPod Touch, Coldplay tickets, Russell Peters tickets, gift certificates and more!

Thank You for your contribution, and continued support with our largest fundraising event and celebration of the spring. If you have any questions, would like to volunteer the evening of the event, or assist in any way, contact The Spring Fair Co-Chairs:  Kevin Hewitt kevin@kevinhewitt.ca  or Brad Cunningham brad@regalroadschoolcouncil.org

Music Monday

Music Monday will be on Monday May 7th.  There will be celebrations all day for classes and individuals. A cellist from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is coming in as a guest for the kindergartens. All other events will be in room 5.

Lateness

After a good start to the school year, late arrivals increased slightly. Please remember that teaching begins at 9:00 a.m. and late arrivals are disruptive to the class.

Asian Heritage Month

Ten years ago, Senator Vivienne Poy made the motion that the month of May be designated Asian Heritage Month in recognition of "the important contributions of Asian Canadians to the settlement, growth and development of Canada, the diversity of the Asian community, and its present significance to the country."

To mark 10 years, the TDSB and the TCDSB are working together to host a number of events in honour of Asian Heritage Month. For more on Asian Heritage Month and for a list of celebrations and events, please visit the Asian Heritage website at www.tdsb.on.ca/asianheritagemonth.

Volunteer Literacy Program

We are looking for more volunteers for September. Now is the time to apply to get involved with the program.

With your help we can make this “Unique to Regal Road” program even better. For more information please contact Vice-Principal Norbert Costa @ 416-393-1390, or drop by the office.

Earth Week

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, 2012, Regal Road P.S. will be celebrating Earth Week from April 30 to May 4. We have rescheduled this celebration in order to include the Grade 5 and 6 students who have been away at the Island School.

Green Club has organized a week of fun events to celebrate the beauty of our planet and bring much needed awareness about what we can do to help take care of our environment on a daily basis. The events are as follows:

Monday, April 30: Green Club $0.50 Sale

We are asking students to bring in gently used clothing, toys or books.  Please drop off any items to Room 5 (Mrs. A.C.).  The items will be on sale during Earth Week.  The sale will take place in the main foyer at all recesses and lunch time.  Proceeds will go to W.W.F.

Tuesday, May 1: Poster or Essay Competition

Primary students in Grades K-3 can draw a poster and Junior students in Grades

4-6 can write an essay about “Why is it important to take care of our environment?”

Please submit all entries to Room 5 (Mrs. A.C.) by Friday May 4, the winner will be announced on Monday, May 7.

Wednesday, May 2: Green Spirit Day!

Students can dress from head to toe in green in celebration of keeping our environment as “green” as possible!

Thursday, May 3: Golden Dust Pan Award

Every Friday, starting next week, the caretakers will be giving the cleanest and greenest classroom the Golden Dust Pan Award.  The caretakers will be looking for the following: no garbage on the floors, correct items being recycled and in the garbage bin.

Friday, May 4: Planting and Garbage Pick-up!

The Grade 3 and Kindergarten students will be working together to do some planting.  We will also be picking up garbage on our school property from 2:40 to 3:15; there will be a sign-up sheet in the office if classes would like to participate for either event.

Student placement - 2012

As the end of the school year approaches, we are planning for the 2012 – 2013 school year. The teaching staff and I will be holding meetings for placement and promotion of students in the coming weeks.  The principles that govern and structure the process of building our classes include a consideration of the following:

  • Gender,
  • Students’ abilities, strengths and achievement levels,
  • Students’ needs and learning behaviours and
  • Students’ interaction patterns that enable them to work and learn together productively.

We consider all factors that will help us to have balanced classes that will work to the benefit of all students, and the school as a whole.

As with past practice and policy, we also welcome input from parents as to the unique needs of your child.  If you wish to provide input regarding your child, please do so on the Student placement request form below and return it to the office by May 11, 2012.

We will notify you of your child’s placement for next year on his/her June report card. Any adjustments to placements will be made in September 2012. It is important to note that we are not asking for, nor can we accept, requests for placement with a specific teacher.

In addition, the ultimate responsibility for placement and promotion lies with the principal.

We also would like to ask that if you know your child will not be attending Regal Road next year, please send us a note, as this also is very helpful in our planning.

We thank you for your partnership with the school.
